Today my daughter, some of her friends, and I joined several thousand other San Diegans, in 'The Rescue'; to raise awareness of Joseph Kony's child soldiers and the need to stop the war in Northern Uganda. I wrote about Invisible Children on Day 106, click here to read more.I cherish my Saturdays, so giving one up was not easy. But, as I've learned more about Invisible Children I knew it would be well worth it. It was.
Arriving at Horton Plaza, (the start location for The Rescue) I noticed I was a minority; surrounded by hundreds of teenagers and college students. I was impressed with their conviction and willingness to give up all the fun things young adults typically do on Saturdays; movies, beach, eating out, etc., for a cause much bigger and more important than all of us.
The organizers grouped us all into teams of 30 and we each held on to a rope as we proceeded through the city and down to the Embarcadero. We cheered and chanted as we passed people on the street. Some would stop and ask what we were doing. We'd explain and invite them to join us.
It was exciting to be a part of it all.
Once we were at the Embarcadero we set up 'camp' and waited. Eventually the organizers assembled us for a photo shoot, which was followed by letter-writing to our state senators.
It was an incredible day, one I'm thankful to have been a part of. I'm optimistic and hopeful that something will be done to rescue the child soldiers in Uganda, and that justice will prevail, and Joseph Kony will be prosecuted for his crimes against children and humanity.
